The Urgent Need for Sustainability in the UK Music Touring Industry (2024)

MMBandServices

The music touring industry has always been excellent for connecting fans across the globe. Live music means a lot to people; some describe the feeling as magical. It connects artists to fans, fans to artists, and also opens up jobs for hundreds!

There is only one issue that remains prominent in the industry—the significant environmental footprint it leaves.

From the extensive use of resources and energy to the emissions from travel and venue operations, the industry’s impact on the planet is profound.

We live by the statement ‘no music on a dead planet,’ and it’s time others in the industry did too.

To ensure that the show can go on for several more generations, it is essential that the entire industry harmonises together with sustainable practices.

Sustainable Transportation

Sleeper buses need to keep up with the times! The latest buses in the industry are HVO fueled or electric. HVO is a direct replacement for diesel that reduces vehicle carbon emissions by 90%!

Artists are becoming more aware of their impact on the planet and the music industry should strive to keep up with environmental options to reduce overall footprint.

We now offer the option for HVO fuelled tours, and all of our quotes will now display the diesel and HVO price.

Eco-Friendly Venues and Waste Reduction

Concerts and festivals inevitably cause a high amount of waste no matter the venue. Utilising venues that invest in renewable energy and efficient waste systems can transform the attendee experience and allow for sustainability that extends beyond the music and into the community.

Fan and Stakeholder Engagement

Education and demonstration are important in the way of amplifying the impact of the change. Promoting environmental awareness and showcasing the effect on the community and conscious individuals are crucial. Involving stakeholders in these decisions can help increase the efforts for a broader change.

Why We Switched to HVO

By switching from diesel to Hydro-treated Vegetable Oil in our sleeper buses, we only release 0.28 kg of CO2 per litre used. By making this change, we are making a significant reduction in our carbon footprint and are no longer relying on diesel-powered transport.

Committing Long-term

In order for our efforts to be impactful, they must also be continuous and require ongoing evaluation of our efforts in order to reach the potential of reducing the carbon footprint of our Band Sleeper Coaches.

As we stand at this crucial juncture, the music touring industry has the opportunity to lead by example. By embracing sustainability, it not only ensures its own future but also contributes to the vital cause of preserving our planet.
